Anyone wanting to operate our hammermill or who wants to become a miller for Desert Harvesters must attend BOTH yesterday’s and today’s workshops.

RSVP or questions to: chaff@DesertHarvesters.org.

This event made even better due to generous support from Lush Cosmetics & The Sustainable Lush Fund.

This workshop is for all those wanting to learn how to grind mesquite (or carob) pods into flour with our hammermill. It will be a hands-on session. We have a number of new improvements to our hammermill, including a lower set up for our ductwork (making for easier set up, break down, and operation), smaller flour skirt increasing the amount of flour produced from the mill, and a new electric-start motor.

We will also demonstrate how the hammermill can be used to separate seed from pods in order to get clean seed that can then be propagated into new trees.

Participants are encouraged to bring pods to the Tasting, Inspection, and Ticketing workshop on Saturday to be milled on Sunday. If we have time to mill them during the training, they will be milled for free. But there is no guarantee we will be able to mill any or all the pods folks bring to the training—since the priority is to train millers, not provide milling. Nonetheless, we must mill some pods, because this is a mesquite-milling training after all!

If you have a vehicle capable of towing the mill and are interested in receiving a per-mile reimbursement for doing so, please bring your driver license and proof of insurance to the training. We will fill you in on other related details and requirements at the training. Note: All drivers towing the mill must first successfully complete the mill operation & safety workshop.
