2012 WORKSHOPS

February 11, 9 am – 1 pm:
Ferment YouR evolution- Kombuchas, Kvas, Kimchis & More: Have fun, build your health & immune system, make and taste a delicious array of traditional ferments, centuries-old recipes which use whey, drinking vinegars, and feature Sonoran Desert ingredients. Participants will prepare and sample a selection of fermented foods and drinks, and enjoy a mid-day feast of (gluten-free) foods, herbs and spirits. Workshop is limited to 15 participants, so sign up soon! Workshop fee: $50

March 24- Cob Sculpture and Building 5 hrs

April 21- Natural plasters for inside and out 5 hrs

May 19- Spring Bean Tree Farm cooking class and harvest dinner (2hrs each, sign up for class and/or dinner)

June 16- Bean Trees! Palo Verde, Ironwood, Mesquite- harvest, preparation, fermentation/ recipes, & why you want to plant more of them and harvest food and rain 4hrs

July 14- Saguaro harvest, Saguaro syrup, Saguaro tequila liqueur, Saguaro jun (dried fruit), Ironwood “peanuts” 4hrs

August 18- Prickly pears, harvest, preparation, fruit and pad, ferments and concentrates, recipes 4hrs

September 29- Sun-cooked salves and herbal oils 4 hours

October 27- Fall Bean Tree Farm cooking class and harvest dinner (2hrs each, sign up for class and/or dinner)

November 10- Earth building, sculpting with Cob & plasters too 5hrs

December 8-Tinctures and cold-season teas, health cooking for the cold and flu season 4hrs

Delicious seasonal fare will be served following each workshop, and you’ll have a chance to do a little harvesting during building workshops as foods mature (for instance, cholla buds, herbs and nopales).

Desert Harvester Kimi Eisele, co-author and editor of our Eat Mesquite! cookbook, will join Anita Kouszewski, author of Food: Field to Fork, and Ivy Manning, Farm to Table Cookbook, on the panel Eat, Write, Love: food, health, & wellness.

The Tucson Festival of Books brings together authors, publishers and the reading public in a family-friendly community event. Net proceeds of the Festival are used to promote literacy in Southern Arizona.
